HISTORY
It is believed that Glasgow was founded in
the 6th century by St.Mungo who later became the
city's patron saint. After having received the
charter to attain a Burgh status by King William
the Lionheart in 1175, Glasgow went on to
prosper as a trading port. It quickly caught on
with the textile industry as soon as the steam
engine was introduced, and also adapted to
shipbuilding that a large number of steam ships
in Britain during the 18th-19th centuries came
out from Glasgow's docks. The city's population
peaked in the mid 19th century as a result of
the railway extension, economic boom, and the
Irish potato famine. However, the hustle and
bustle started to die down after the end of
WWII, and Glasgow began to recover from the
deterioration in spirit and physique. Its
recently discovered tourism and service industry
has become so successful that Glasgow has
outshined Edinburgh as Scotland's biggest city
today.
